Background


World Cargo at Heathrow Airport is then centre of all British Airways global cargo business. The airport cargo facility makes Heathrow the world's second busiest airport for cargo moving 1.3 million tonnes of cargo each year.

World Cargo can handle everything from live animals, to formula one racing cars, airmail and container freight. It contains a customs and freight clearance facility to ensure a speedy onward delivery.

A facilities management service to maintain all building services and cargo handling equipment was established with business critical Service Level Agreements. Maintenance planning has to integrate within operational schedules and specific airside training, plant & equipment is necessary.

Objectives


  • Establish electronic asset register database detailing all plant, equipment and services.
  • Catalogue and procure all relevant specialist sub-contracts for materials handling plant.
  • Create and implement operational plan to meet freight handling programme.
  • Liaison with staff union over TUPE transfer requirements throughout the contract change process.
  • Develop and detailed understanding in order to meet all airside regulatory requirements in time for contract start.
  • Develop and implement a planned preventative maintenance plan.
  • Work with other contractor organisations to co-ordinate emergency plan activities.

Outcomes


  • Within 3-months of contract award full operational status had been achieved.
  • Successful employment contract change in full compliance with TUPE requirements achieved for 12 staff.
  • Service Level Agreements for all operational activities achieved and incorporated into operational schedules.
  • Planned preventative maintenance system developed and implemented.
  • High level of client satisfaction achieved within probationary period proven by independent survey.
  • Integrated support service (multi-contracts) approach achieved to provide BA World Cargo with seamless service provision.
